Education, Health, and Gender: A Family Perspective

Guest editors: Emilia Del Bono, Helmut Rainer and Marco Francesconi

Special issue information

The concept and structure of the family has undergone significant changes over time. The modern family is now predominantly nuclear, smaller in size than just a few decades ago, and characterized by greater equality in gender roles and responsibilities. It is also widely accepted that families change over time, splitting and reconfiguring, and are vastly heterogeneous, now including an increasing proportion of childless and same-sex couples. Yet, despite all these significant shifts and transformations, the family continues to be a fundamental institution in our society and provides a variety of important functions, including the regulation of reproduction, the development of socialization and identity, investments in education and health, as well as care for its members.

In this issue we seek to explore more closely the role of the family in our society, especially in the light of the technological, lifestyle and economic transformations that characterized the last few decades and new migration patterns.  We are particularly interested in papers which address the mechanisms through which the family acts as a way to perpetuate or transform societal norms in relation to gender, identity and sexual orientation. We are also interested in how the family contributes to the adult development of its members, especially in terms of health, educational achievement, and the transmission of non-cognitive skills and individual traits.
